چکیده

A prototype system has been developed for diagnosing problems in software that controls computer networks. Techniques for model-based diagnosis that have been used successfully in physical systems are applied and extended to computer network software. Our approach divides this software into its natural hierarchy of layers, subdividing each layer into three separately modeled components: the interface to the layer above on the same machine, the protocol to the same layer on a remote machine, and the connguration. This paper presents a case study illustrating the diagnosis of some connguration problems involving the widely used FTP and DNS network software. Our approach considers diagnosis as a dynamic partial constraint satisfaction problem. Activity constraints are used to interface the model with the "real world" of the network, allowing the model to dynamically obtain data from the network and to use that data to change the problem as the search for a solution progresses. The partial solutions discovered by our system constitute the diagnosis. This work concentrates on modeling the network infrastructure itself. We believe it gives us a solid foundation for understanding basic problems that occur at all levels in information networks, and that the techniques we have developed are applicable at higher levels as well.

Integration of Distributed Constraint-Based Con gurators

Con guration problems are a thriving application area for declarative knowledge representation that experiences a constant increase in size and complexity of knowledge bases. However, today's con gurators are designed for solving local con guration problems not providing any distributed con guration problem solving functionality. Consequently the challenges for the construction of con guration ...

Interchangeability for Case Adaptation in Con guration Problems

We address in this paper the adaptation of a case when a complete constraint model of the underlying problem is given. The idea is to apply methods from constraint based reasoning that allows the detection of \similar" solutions, which can be used to adapt a selected case to a new situation. We consider applications like con-guration where a complete constraint model is available. For these app...

A Constraint-Based Approach to Diagnosing Software Problems in Computer Networks

Distributed software problems can be particularly mystifying to diagnose, for both system users and system administrators. Model-based diagnosis methods that have been more commonly applied to physical systems can be brought to bear on such software systems. A prototype system has been developed for diagnosing problems in software that controls computer networks. Our approach divides this softw...

Ecai-96 Workshop 27 Partial Satisfaction of Constraint Hierarchies in Reactive and Interactive Connguration

Experience in applying expert systems revealed that there is usually a signi cant gap between the problem in the expert's mind and its formal speci cation. Thus, real-world con guration and scheduling problems often require a close dialogue between an expert and the expert system during the con guration process in order to bridge this gap. The expert must be able to re ne and correct the proble...

Kinematic Synthesis with Con guration Spaces

This paper introduces a new approach to the conceptual design of mechanical systems from qualitative speciications of behaviour. The power of the approach stems from the integration of techniques in qualitative physics and constraint programming. We illustrate the approach with an eeective kinematic synthesis method that reasons with qualitative representations of connguration spaces using cons...
